TOG GaitScanTM Technology

The TOG GaitScanTM is the industry leader in dynamic gait scanning technology. It consists of a plate covered with thousands of microscopic sensors that measure the pressure of the foot while walking (dynamic) and standing (static) on the plate. This information gives your practitioner detailed information that can’t be seen with the naked eye. With over 1 million data points recorded and analyzed, a detailed map of the specific movements and limitations of the feet are provided. This helps to determine a patient’s need for custom-made foot orthotics.

For patients requiring custom orthotics, the information provided by the GaitScanTM and full biomechanical assessment provided by the practitioner will be used to create an individualized orthotic prescription to meet the patient’s needs. The orthotics are typically made of flexible moulded polypropylene with a top layer of cushioning for added comfort. There are a wide range of styles to allow for orthotic use in most types of footwear. All styles can be viewed here: https://www.tog.com/PatientSite/Orthotics.aspx

The fine print:

Full payment is due on your first visit, before the orthotics are made. There is no fee for your second visit, where Dr. Foot will check the fit of your orthotics and go over the break in period.

Please contact your benefits provider prior to your appointment for a complete list of requirements. Typically, providers require a custom orthotics referral from your medical doctor prior to fabrication of your orthotics. Dr. Foot is a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic, with training in biomechanical assessment and custom foot casting.

The purchase of your custom-made orthotics includes the consultation, fitting, and any follow-up appointments. We will provide you with everything you need to satisfy your insurance provider (diagnosis, biomechanical assessment, gait analysis, materials list and itemized receipt). Any modifications made within the first 3 months of purchasing your orthotics are also included. Modifications made after 4 months will be charged a fee of $50.

FAQ

Why do I need custom orthotics? In an ideal world, we’d be barefoot, with the earth beneath our feet. In our concrete world, we need footwear to protect our feet and absorb the shock. Shoes are typically designed with fashion before form; the toe box creates too much compression on our toes, and the insoles offer minimal support. This combination can lead to sore joints, especially in the feet, ankles and knees. Custom orthotics provide the stability for our feet to function optimally, and provide shock absorption to keep our joints healthy.

How do custom orthotics work? Custom made orthotics are insoles designed for your feet. They are placed inside your shoes to give stability and support through the heel, arch and forefoot. This can reduce stress on your foot and ankle joints, which can improve the movements of your whole body.

Why do my new orthotics feel uncomfortable? Your custom orthotics are working to realign your feet, and initially you may feel pressure in certain areas as your body adapts to the orthotics. To prevent discomfort, custom orthotics should initially be worn in two hour intervals, and slowly for longer periods as your feet adapt. You should expect this process to take about two weeks.

Will orthotics weaken my feet? Custom orthotics do not reduce muscle tone. In fact, they can help position your foot to allow for the right muscles to contract at the right time. This reduces fatigue and means that your foot muscles can work more efficiently.

Are custom orthotics covered by my insurance? Most extended health plans cover custom made orthotics. Some plans will require that you also submit a prescription from your family doctor. Your provider will be able to tell you your coverage and any specific requirements.
